Moving Into A New Home? Make Sure You Prepare It First
If you are moving into a new home, you should take the time to prepare it before you and your family move in. This is more than cleaning and moving your things into your home. Below are four things you should make sure you do so your family will be safe and comfortable.
Contact a Locksmith
One of the first things you should do is to call a locksmith from a company like Security Locksmiths and schedule an appointment. They can come to your home and do a security assessment. The locksmith can change all of the locks or have the locks rekeyed so the previous owners cannot get into the home. You also never know who the previous owner gave a key to, such as another family member or friend.
While the locksmith is there, they will suggest other things you should do to make the home more secure. For example, you should have a security system installed. If there is already a security system in place, call the security company and let them know. They can change the security code, or you may want to consider installing a new one.
Know How to Shut Off the Water
You never know when you will have water flood your home, so you need to make sure you know how to shut off the water to your entire house. This is important, as it can save you a lot of money in damages.
Have Your Heating and Air Serviced
Contact an HVAC technician to come to your new home and service your HVAC unit. They will clean it thoroughly and make sure all the inner parts are in good condition. They will clean the duct work (if needed), change the air filter, and test for any leaks in the system.
You do not want to discover that your HVAC unit does not work when it becomes very cold or hot outside.
Call a Pest Control Company
Even if you do not see any pests, you should still call a pest control company to inspect your home. Some pests are merely a nuisance, while others, such as fleas, can cause health problems. The pest control agent will check for termites, as those can cause structural damage to the home. If the agent finds any problems, you can set up a schedule for them to come to your home regularly, such as once a month.
When you finish with these steps, you will feel much better knowing everything is as it should be with your new home.
