Tips For Keeping Your Kitchen Drain Clear
If you work in a kitchen for any length of time and need to wash any food off of plates, there's a good chance that you may have experienced the frustrating phenomenon of having your drain get clogged. When your kitchen drain gets clogged, it tends to smell bad and makes the water in your sink drain more slowly. Here are some tips for avoiding and fixing the problem of having a clogged kitchen drain.
1. Use a Strainer and a Grease Collector
Your first step is to attempt to prevent as much food from going down the drain as possible. You can do this by simply using a strainer to make sure that larger food particles don't make it down the drain and clog it up. Simply empty the strainer whenever it gets too full.
Another critical prevention strategy is to keep as much grease from going down your drain as possible. The reason why this is so important is because if grease should go down your sink, it is going to adhere to the walls of the pipes and make the overall diameter of the pipes smaller, leading to a greater amount of clogged drain buildup in a shorter period of time. You can keep grease from going down the sink's drain by covering it with something that won't allow grease through and pouring the grease into another disposable container, such as a glass jar. Be sure that you don't touch the hot grease.
2. Boil Out the Grease
If you find that you still have a ton of leftover grease in your sink even after you started trying to avoid putting grease down the drain, you are going to need to actively get it out. You can do this by boiling a pot of water. Pour some grease-busting dish soap down the drain. Then, pour a little bit of the boiling water down the drain at a time. This will loosen the grease and force it down the pipes. If you have years of grease buildup, you might need to repeat this action several times. Let the boiling water sit in the pipes with the soap for ten minutes or so and then rinse it out with warm water.
