Garage Door Window Broken? Things To Consider During Replacement
Garage door windows are nice to have to allow natural light into a space, but unfortunately, they do break from time to time and could increase the chances of your garage getting broken into. Here, you will find a few ideas to consider as you make the repair to your garage door.
Removing and Securing the Window
Removing the broken glass can be a little tricky. Not only do you have to worry about getting the broken glass picked up off of the garage floor, but you also have to get the glass out of the door itself. To do this you will need a few supplies, including: Thick work gloves, safety glasses, duct tape, newspaper, flat-head screwdriver, and a box.
Now, use the duct tape to cover the edges of the glass that remains in the door. This will make it a little safer and easier for you to grab what's left. Try using your hands to pull the glass out place. If that doesn't work, you may need to get some pliers and a rag. Place the rag over the taped glass and use the pliers to pull it out.
Once you get the glass out, place it in the box with some newspaper. Now, use the screwdriver to pry the small pieces of glass out of the edges.
Sweep up the mess and maybe use a shop-vac to suck the remaining glass shards out of the window opening.
Close up that hole with a sheet of plywood or Plexiglas. It doesn't have to look perfect as this is just a temporary measure.
Options for Replacement
As mentioned earlier, those garage door windows can increase the chances of someone trying to break into your garage. If they can see in, and like what they see, all they have to do is get inside. Rather than allowing the clear view into the garage, consider installing new glass panels in the garage door that are frosted or tinted. This way, you still get the sunlight that you want, but people will not be able to see in.
Note: There are many options to consider – some will provide a better insulating factor to help keep your garage secure.
